Hot tub feels like sandpaper

If your hot tub has a chalky like substance on the walls and seats and it feels like sandpaper, the calcium in the water has dropped out of solution. There are two ways to fix this. One is with tons and tons of elbow grease. Or you could use a great product called Stain and Scale Control. This product by SpaGuard is phenomenal.

How to Fix It with Stain and Scale Control

To fix this, you will use the oldest filter you have and add one quart of Stain and Scale Control to the hot tub. You will not be able to use it for the next 24-48 hours. You will run the jets as often as possible, cleaning the filters every couple of hours to physically remove the calcium. Rinse out the filter with some serious pressure and a garden hose. You will drain the hot tub (yes you can drain into the yard) and throw away the filter and start fresh with a hot tub that will run as if it is good as new.

How to Fix It with Elbow Grease

If you don't want to use chemicals, you can try fixing it with elbow grease. This will take a lot more time, but it can be done. First, you need to identify where the calcium build-up is coming from (hint: it is your source water ) If it's just on the surface, you can try scrubbing it with a soft brush or sponge. If the build-up is deeper, you may need to use a scratch pad like the one below or something similar. Be careful not to damage the surface of your hot tub while you're scrubbing. If you over scrub, if you damage the surface there is no repair Once you've removed as much of the build-up as possible, you should rinse the area well and then dry it off completely. Find a suitable hardness control for your hot tub water.

Conclusion:

If your hot tub has a chalky substance on the walls and seats that feels like sandpaper, don't worry! There are two ways to fix this problem: either with elbow grease or by using a product called Stain and Scale Control. Whichever method you choose, your hot tub will be good as new in no time!
